This section of the book becomes quite technical at times where the authors really strip back conventional research question ideas and assumptions regarding previously taken for granted ideas and theories. All researchers want to produce interesting and influential theories.

It is increasingly recognized that what makes a theory interesting and influential is that it challenges our assumptions in some significant way. However, established ways for arriving at research questions mean spotting or constructing gaps in existing theories rather than challenging their assumptions. We propose problematization as a methodology for identifying and challenging assumptions processes. As both the Sandberg and Alvesson (2011) and, in particular, Locke and Golden-Biddle (1997) studies show, researchers com-monly construct gaps by arranging existing studies in specific ways. For example, one way to create a gap, identified by Locke and Golden-Biddle, is to synthesize coherence in which the 16 In Chapter 6 Alvesson and Sandberg use their methodology to problematize two theories reflected in two frequently cited articles: Dutton, Dukerich and Harquail’s (1994) work on the study of identity in organizations and West and Zimmerman’s (1987) study of gender.
